COPPER ROOF
Copper can be applied as one continuous covering, as a "Standing Seam" which is formed from smaller interlocking panels or as shingles (can also imitate tiles or slate). Copper is fire resistant and can be recycled or furnished from recycled materials. The green coloring that develops over time comes from copper carbonate and is known as "verdigris." Although initially more costly, a copper roof will out-last any other type of "non-metal" roof and probably will out-last the structure it rests on. So in this sense it will save you dramatically on the cost of roof repairs and installing a new roof altogether. Without question, a copper roof is the most beautiful type of roof you can ad to your home. |
LEAD COATED COPPER ROOF
Lead Coated Copper (LCC) has been around since he early 1900's. LCC is made by dripping copper sheets into molten lead, coating both sides and thus becoming much more malleable. The main purpose for using Lead Coated Copper is it provides an alternative color to architectural copper applications. Lead Coated Copper is a particular favorite in the North East of the U.S. because it combines copper's durability with lead's resistance to acid rain and characteristic of not staining adjacent materials. |
ALUMINUM ROOF
Aluminum is a great choice around coastal regions because it is the most rust resistant out of all the metals. Like Steel, Aluminum is also very light weight. Aluminum can come in a variety of roofing types and designs including standing seam, shake and can be formed to have the appearance of tile or slate without the requirement to add support to the roof rafters in order to install the actual tile or slate. Aluminum roofing is fire resistant and actually lessens the sound of rain hitting the roof. Studies show metal roofs can absorb up to 34% less heat than traditional asphalt shingles. also, for a greener approach, you can use recycled aluminum instead of new. An aluminum roof can last up to 50 years or more. One negative aspect; depending on where you live, can be damage from hail because it it much more malleable than other heavier metals. |
STAINLESS STEEL ROOF
Stainless steel is probably the lowest costing of all the metal roof options. Stainless steel is an alloy and can be made using a variety of techniques –from the traditional standing seam method to special welded techniques. Protective coatings are applied to keep it rust and corrosion resistant. These coatings can be a combination of anything from zinc & aluminum to chromium & nickel or even titanium. in addition, the range of surfaces vary from subdued grays to bright mirror-type finishes and they will all change their appearance as they reflect even subtle changes in lighting conditions. Steel can be formed to have the appearance of tile or slate without the requirement to add support to the roof rafters in order to install the actual tile or slate. Stainless steel reflects heat well and cools down much quicker after sundown. Properly erected, stainless steel should last 60 years or more. For a greener approach, recycled steel can be used as well. |
